Something Awesome Sub-Chapter 1.2: Microsoft Windows Security Principles

This sub-chapter explores the security principles associated with Microsoft Windows, including tokens, firewalls, messaging and program execution.

1.2.1 - Windows Tokens

Access tokens limit a user's or program's access to certain systems. This is an effective way of containing the potential of full system compromise.

Tokens are used to access securable objects (from files and directories to registry keys). Tokens contain an identity, privileges, type and access controls.

A token's identity describes to whom the token belongs, and includes a user and group field (akin to a first and last name for identification).

Group memberships can be used with token identities to simplify resource access management.

Privileges outlines certain operations that the holder of the token can perform.

Some privileges indicate that the programs can perform certain operations, while others allow the user to acquire the access and permissions of someone else after the user authenticates.

Tokens can be of types primary (identify processes) or impersonation (identify threads).

Impersonation levels include anonymous, identification, impersonation and delegation.

Anonymous: A program cannot identify or impersonate the user of the token. Primarily used to assert that a token exists.

Identification: Inspect the user of the token, the group memberships and any privileges that the token has enables.

Impersonation: Allows a program to perform operations on behalf of the user of the token on the local system.

Delegation: A program can access both the local system and network resources on behalf of the user of the token.

Access control lists describe the access that identities may request when accessing the token. Entries on the list explicitly allow or deny specific types of operations on the token.

1.2.2 - Window Messaging

Windows-Messaging Queue: Allows program windowns on Microsoft OS's to interact. Handles events such as mouse clicks and keyboard input.

Attackers may use window messaging for a variety of malicious purposes including monitoring, covert communication and exploitaiton.

Shatter attacks involve an attacker (already on a system) sending a WM_TIMER message to a process running as a local system and pass a second parameter containing an address for the timer callback function, which will execute with local system privileges. This attack effectively sidesteps numerous limitations and allows for privilege escalation.

1.2.3 - Windows Program Execution

Validating parameters involves determining the validity of parameters, process scheduling priority and stream output destination, as well as assigning exception handlers, debugging systems and the process to the appropriate desktop.

The load image file step is responsible for loading the file into shared memory, determining the file image type and calling CreateProcess to handle non-native files (if necessary).

A thread is a self-contained set of executable instructions that interacts with the operating system and its related resources through the system API.

The project object step involves establishing a working environment for the executable image, creating a virtual memory address space, mapping ntdIL.dll to a new address space, recording an entry in the Windows Security Event log and registering the process object with the OS.

The creation of the initial thread is segmented into the following stages; the kernel generates the initial thread, the execution context for the thread is created, the stack for the initial thread is established and, finally, the kernel assigns the initial thread a Thread ID.

The subsystem initialization phase contains the following steps; the OS verifies the validity of the executable image, the Windows subsystem (hereafter referred to as WS) is informed of the process, the WS generates a Process ID (PID) for the new process, the WS establishes scheduling priority for the new process, and the WS initiates the "Waiting" cursor icon.

The execution of the initial thread involves the thread being executed by the OS, the IRQL and other kernel-level attributes are established, the locale and process type are defined in the Thread Execution Block (TEB), a debugger is created (if required), prefetching begins, and stack cookies are established.

The initialization process is completed with these steps; the Thread-Local Storage (TLS) and Fiber-Local Storage (FLS) are initialized, an additional preemptive thread is generated, the import table is processed, and the required DLLs are loaded.

The process beings by being called and separated, and then returning the PID of the new process.

1.2.4 - The Windows Firewall

The Windows firewall consists of a network driver, a user interface and a network service.

Although many malicious attacks are defended by the firewall, the simplicity of its design can lead to various loopholes that can be exploited by attackers. For example, earlier versions of Windows included a firewall that would accept any form of traffic from Internet Explorer, regardless of its contents or sender.

“No, Sam no!” Dean huffed like a little kid, groaning when he tried to reach over his younger brother but being unable to reach as far Sam could with his long arms.

“Why? What do you have in here that you so desperately don’t want me to see? Is it porn or online dating again?” Sam smirked, raising an eyebrow as Dean glared at him.

“I told you no, now give it back. I don’t check your fucking texts!” Dean said stubbornly, jumping to reach higher but it was impossible.

His eyes were solely fixated on Y/N and the way she was laughing and dancing with Brianna. Hell, he couldn’t even hear the music over the sound of her bell like laughter ringing in his ears. He was drunk and not only on the “apple juice”  he had been drinking all day, but on her. She filled his senses and Jensen allowed his mind to wander as he watched how the short summer dress she was wearing clung to her curves in all the right places. The floor was cold beneath your feet as you padded quietly down the Bunker hallway, very much regretting your choice to forgo the slippers by the foot of your bed. As the bright lights attacked you from above, you were also regretting the bottle of rum you made disappear the night before.

The halls were silent, the War Room empty, but delicious smells were filling the air; fresh coffee and bacon calling you towards the kitchen. As you approached, floating like a cartoon character on the waves of aroma, a gentle hum began to push back the silence. The closer you got to the kitchen, the louder the hum became, soon mixing with a peppy beat and then a whistle as the radio was turned up.

“Baby love… mmhhh hhhmmm…”

You arrived in the doorway, mouth immediately falling open as you beheld the most beautiful thing: Dean was at the counter, one hand poking at a strip of bacon in the pan, the other carefully lifting the waffle iron to check on his creation. The radio in the corner was tuned to an oldies station, and Dean’s hips swayed in time with the Motown groove.

Leaning against the door, you watched as he began to dance. It was just a little twist of his hips, a faint swing of arms, but it was amazing. He sang along again, softly and off key, and the scene made you laugh, instantly calling attention to your arrival.

You thought he would be embarrassed to be caught, but Dean turned to you with a smile that lit his entire being. His green eyes were filled with a peaceful happiness as they fell upon your sleep-disheveled form, cheeks raising to form those perfect crinkles in the corners of his eyes.

“Morin’, Baby,” he said with a flash of pearly whites.

“Hey.” You bit your lip as you replied, trying not to giggle like a teenager, but it was useless. Seeing Dean so calm and happy filled your heart with rainbows and unicorns and all things fluffy and stupid. It was almost annoying, but that’s what happens when you’re in love.

“Come here,” he said, suddenly moving towards you with one hand outstretched. You stepped forward and took his hand, gasping in delight when Dean pulled you close, spinning you around until your back was flush against his chest. He wrapped himself around you, curling his big arms around your body, and fitting his chin in the crook of your neck. He whispered along with the song again as his hips began to move, and soon you were dancing with him, just two idiots in love first thing in the morning.

“Ooh baby love, my baby love…I need you, oh how I need you…”

And those sprinkles on top ooooh-” Dean grinned like a kid in a candy shop as he put his jacket on “They’re just perfect! And I’ll get you some cookies too, you like cookies don’t you? They’ve got some vegan ones and oh I never thought I’d say this but they rock!” he laughed with a small nod of his head “I’ll get plenty of those yeah and maybe something else. What else do we need? I’ll just see.” he ended up mumbling to himself, making Sam look at him as if he’d grown a second head.

“Dean-” Sam raised a hand to stop himself from leaving “What are you talking about?!”

“…Cupcakes and cookies?” the older Winchester ended up asking as if it was the most simple thing, not understanding Sam’s point.

“Well, yes but that-” Sam pursed his lips, shaking his head “You don’t do cupcakes and cookies, that’s the thing! What the hell is wrong with you man, another witch got to you or something? Ever since that bakery opened at the corner of the street you’re there every chance you can get!”

“Come on Sam!” Dean scoffed “We just need the supplies man, that’s all!”

“Dean the kitchen’s like full of sweets, and half of those are pies which even you cannot eat! That many!” Sam threw his arms in the air in disbelief “We don’t need any more, so what’s all this for hm?” he ended up crossing his arms over his chest.
